Virginia UngarVirginia Ungar, M.D., training analyst at the Buenos Aires Psychoanalytic Association (APdeBA). She was the Chair of the IPA’s Child and Adolescent Psychoanalysis Committee(COCAP) and of the IPA Committee for Integrated Training. She is a member of the Latin American Board of the International Journal of Psychoanalysis (IJP). She was Visiting Professor at the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Center, at the Cleveland Psychoanalytic Center, at the Australian Psychoanalytic Society (APAS) and at the Finnish Psychoanalytic Society. She was awarded a Konex of Platinum in 2016 and the Sigourney Award in 2023. She is the former President of the International Psychoanalytic Association (2017-2021). She was the first woman to be elected to that position.

Educational Objectives

FRIDAY MORNING SESSION:  THE INFANTILE IN THE CLINICAL ENCOUNTER

  1. Participants will describe how the disturbance of normal countertransference can be corrected to facilitate psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.
  2. Participants will explain how the infantile in the clinical encounter influences the functioning of the psychoanalytic treatment relationship.

FRIDAY MORNING GAM GROUP:

  1. Participants will apply the Group Affective Model to explain disturbance in countertransference as it relates to the infantile in the clinical relationship.
  2. Participants will utilize the GAM group to discuss the infantile in object relationships, making links with clinical and group experiences.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON SESSION:  CLINICAL CASE PRESENTATION

  1. Participants will describe one example of a child’s use of a toy and one example of a child’s use of a drawing to express inner conflict.
  2. Participants will identify two play therapy techniques for creating a safe space for a child’s expression of aggression and identify three techniques that support the establishment of a therapeutic relationship.

FRIDAY AFTERNOON GAM GROUP:

  1. Participants will discuss 2 common anxieties in clinical work with children and parents.
  2. Participants will use the group process to describe 1 ethical challenge working with families and give one illustration of the concept of “the child in the adult.”

SATURDAY MORNING SESSION:  PSYCHOANALYTIC CLINICAL PRACTICE WITH CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN TIMES OF UNCERTAINTY

  1. Participants will describe two aspects of the analytic therapist’s role in guiding the patient through and emerging from their claustrophobic state.
  2. Participants will explain the impact of socio-political contexts on psychotic and/or paranoid functioning.

SATURDAY MORNING GAM GROUP:

  1. Participants will utilize the GAM model to discuss defenses that influence internal and external/global conflict.
  2. Participants will apply the GAM model to draw links between the developmental experiences of adolescence and socio-cultural challenges.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON SESSION:  THE TURBULENCE OF PUBERTY TODAY

  1. Participants will define the concept of emotional turbulence and ways it manifests in clinical settings.
  2. Participants will identify the psychoanalytic and symbolic meanings of self-harm in adolescence.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON GAM GROUP:

  1. Participants will utilize the GAM model to examine the role of curiosity in the psychoanalytic work and in the psychoanalytic psychotherapeutic process.
  2. Participants will apply the GAM model to explain how parental function impacts aggression in adolescence.

SUNDAY MORNING SESSION:  PLAY AND PLAYING

  1. Participants will discuss the clinical significance of using clear language that resonates with the expressions of patients, both child and adult.
  2. Participants will describe two ways to manage and make space for aggressive fantasies in both child and adult psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalysis.

SUNDAY MORNING GAM GROUP:

  1. Participants will utilize the GAM model to describe how play facilitates psychoanalytic psychotherapy and psychoanalytic treatment in children and adults.
  2. Participants will be able to utilize the GAM model to describe the role of aggressive fantasies in patients, making links to internal and external object relationships.

SUNDAY AFTERNOON SESSION:  CLOSING DIALOGUE

  1. Participants will name and describe two general themes from the conference that will lead to a change in their clinical practice.
  2. Participants will identify two concepts presented during the conference that will enrich their clinical skills.

Continuing Education Information
