2019-2020 Master Speaker Videoconference Series: LOVE IN PSYCHOANALYSIS AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

Monthly seminar beginning Friday, September 27th. Join us in person at a local site, or over the internet using your computer, tablet, or smartphone.

The 2019-2020 Master Speaker Series will feature live presentations by Guest Presenters and IPI Faculty, with discussion, case presentations, and advance readings distributed before each session. Participants may attend in person in Long Island, NY, or can join by video conference over the internet. Internet participants will all have the opportunity to participate fully in the seminar by joining in the live discussion. Seminars take place from 9:00-11:00 a.m. US Eastern Time, with additional group discussion available at the Long Island site. Participants joining over the internet can do so easily by downloading a free program for their computer, laptop, tablet or smart phone, and clicking on a simple link provided for each session.

Educational Objectives

 

September 27: Narcissistic personalities’ incapacity to love: Diagnosis and treatment

Participants will be able to describe two destructive modes of relating that interfere with loving and being loved in narcissistic personalities.

October 18: Falling in love, being in love, staying in love, failing in love, grieving love

Participants will discuss two developmental factors associated with sustained successful couple relationships and two factors that often precipitate failure in couple relating. 

November 15: The unlovable, not good-enough child

Participants will identify one child characteristic and one couple dynamic associated with problematic parent/child interactions. 

December 6: Sex, attachment and love

Participants will be able to describe two psychodynamic interventions with couples exhibiting both attachment and sexual difficulties.

January 17: Psychoanalytic and Neurobiological Perspectives of Love: Inside and Outside the Analytic Setting

Participants will be able to describe three findings from affective neuroscience research that inform psychodynamic interventions pertinent to nurturing and loving relationships.

February 21:  Love and Possession in Intimate Relating

Participants will be able to discuss two differences between possessive love that interferes with healthy couple relating and empathetic loving that facilitates couple intimacy.

March 6: Love in a Time of Cholera

Participants will develop capacity for describing the persistence or destruction of love in diseased states of mind.

April 3:  Aspects of love and its discontents

Participants will be able to identify three types of loving that promote destructiveness within intimate relationships and how these types of might be identified by the treating clinician.

May 1: Restorative Aspects of Transference and Countertransference Love

Participants will be able to describe two ways that transference/countertransference interactions can assist in the restoration of damaged internal objects. 

Continuing Education Credit Hours

2 CE hours per video conference; 18 hours for full series of nine. Additional hour/s may be available at some local sites for participation in group discussion following the videoconference, for an additional fee.

Tuition and Fees

Registration Fee:  $52 for individual video sessions. $410 for the full series of nine.
