Quotations from W.R.D. Fairbairn

"If it be asked how it comes about that conditional badness is preferred to unconditional badness, the cogency of the answer may best be appreciated if the answer is framed in religious terms; for such terms provide the best representation for the adult mind of the situation as it presents itself to the child. Framed in such terms, the answer is that it is better to be a sinner in a world ruled by God than to live in a world ruled by the Devil." (Endopsychic Structure Considered in Terms of Object-Relationships, 1944)

Supervision Program

Chair: Mary Jo Pisano, Ph.D.

Program Overview

The IPI faculty offers supervision to individuals and groups. Anyone may request supervision from IPI, whether enrolled in an IPI program or not. Supervision is available but not required for students in the Two-Year Object Relations Theory and Practice Program. It is a requirement for a certificate in the Couple, Child and Family Program.
Individual, paired and group supervision is offered face-to-face, by telephone, or for sites or individuals with videoconference capability by videoconference. Currently those IPI sites with videolinks are Chevy Chase, Salt Lake City, Long Island, Indianapolis, Omaha and Panama. Fees vary by site. For more information contact IPI.

Contact IPI Supervision Program Chair, Mary Jo Pisano, Ph.D., for additional information.

Attention Students:
As IPI faculty, clinicians and members of the supervision committee, we want to emphasize the importance of being in supervision. Therefore, we have decided to offer you an opportunity of one free supervision consultation for one of your patients each program year (July through June). This will give you an experience of the supervision process with an IPI faculty member. Our hope is to encourage students to engage in on-going supervision as part of their learning at IPI and to make supervision available to those who would like it.
If you are interested, please contact one of us. The supervision committee will be coordinating this process.
